ROLL UP: Gerrards Cross and The Chalfonts Rotary Club to hold recruitment event

Published on: 10th October 2023   |   By: Annabel Stock   |   Category: Uncategorized

Gerrards Cross and The Chalfonts Rotary Club is in desperate need of new blood after seeing membership dwindle in recent years.

Ian Williams, 52, secretary for the club, says he is the youngest Rotarian by 20 years and that while the club boasted as many as 50 members back in its heyday, it now has a mere 16.

The club raise between £20,000 and £30,000 annually for local charities, including amateur sports clubs, but say they will struggle to do so in the future unless younger and more mobile members can be recruited to help with collections.

Ian believes there are misconceptions of Rotary which he is seeking to combat.

He explained: “The perception of rotary is not a good one. It is seen as a secret, male society like the masons, but we are nothing like the masons. The motto of Rotary is ‘service above self’ but in Gerrards Cross, we’re replacing that with ‘giving back to the community’.”

The club will be holding a membership recruitment event on October 12, at Vinny and Ted’s in Chalfont St Peter. Rotary members talk about what they do and how they give back to the community, covering projects like the Christmas Float, Charity Golf Day, Gerrards Cross Classic Car Show and more.
