ROCKY HORROR: Residents slam decision to install boulders on Croxley Green

Residents who have slammed the decision to place 170 boulders on The Green have nicknamed the village ‘Croxley Henge’.

The boulders appeared at the start of August in a bid to prevent drivers from parking on The Green.

However, many locals have not welcomed the decision by Three Rivers District Council (TRDC) and Croxley Green Parish Council (CGPC), describing the rocks as an “aberration” and “a total disaster”.

Jason Keen, owner of The Artichoke on The Green, told Croxley News: “It can be busy on The Green and sometimes there is an overspill onto the green which we know is unacceptable.

“As local businesses, we are exceptionally compassionate about our neighbours and want to protect the environment.

“But these aberrations have turned the beautiful green into Croxley Henge. They could have done it more nicely.

“We will raise it with CGPC because there should have been some sort of consultation with residents and businesses.

“This will affect residents as people will now park in side roads and it will have an impact on businesses.”

Croxley resident Clive Hooley, who has lived in the village all his life, also feels the rocks are not the answer. He created a Facebook page about the boulders which received many complaints from locals before the page was removed.

He told Croxley News: “I was devastated when out of the blue these ugly rocks started to appear.

“They are totally at odds with what our historic green is all about. The visual flow has been destroyed; it now looks fragmented, untidy and a less attractive place.

“I started a Facebook page on it and the overwhelming view was they were not liked. Many comments were made on how no consultation or warning was made before they appeared.

“I feel that the whole exercise hadn’t been throughout properly and has been a total disaster.”

CGPC issued a statement following the criticism, stating: “We looked at several options which included replacing the wooden posts, or a more substantial option such as the boulders.

“The cost of putting wooden posts along the affected areas was deemed too high with the quotes coming in at around £40,000.  The boulder option was significantly less at approximately £10,000 with TRDC providing the labour for their installation.

“We appreciate that not everybody will agree with our solution, but it was felt that action was needed to be taken in the areas affected by the illegal parking.  Like all the decisions we take, their efficacy will be evaluated over time.”
