‘REWARDING’: Inspirational duo launch para-badminton sessions in Stanmore

New para-badminton sessions in Stanmore have proved to be a big hit so far, with adult sessions set to be introduced in 2024.

Junior disability and para-badminton sessions took place at Aspire Leisure Centre, located within the grounds of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, between November 21 and December 12.

The sessions were set up by inspirational pair Sakina Chandoo and Shafana Muraj, who also both play and love the sport.

They wanted to give an opportunity to children who may not have had a chance to play badminton before.

The sessions have proved to be a huge success since the launch event in Stanmore earlier this year.

Sakina and Shafana told STANMOREnews: “Those who have taken part have loved it and it’s been so rewarding to see the joy they have for playing.

“Because we run these sessions at the spinal unit, we have sports wheelchairs and all the resources we need.

“We also have a specialist coach who understands the needs and requirements of those taking part.”

Regular junior and ladies-only coached badminton sessions also take place at Aspire Leisure Centre.

If anyone is interested in joining any of the sessions, including junior para-badminton on Tuesdays from 5pm to 6pm, email info@smashbadmintonacademy.co.uk or visit their Instagram page @smash_badminton_academy.
