A free-to-attend mental health support group for men is preparing to launch in Rickmansworth this autumn.
Scott Johnson started the Proper Blokes Club in Southwark in 2020 due to his own mental health issues, having spent the “best part of a decade” embroiled in court processes to secure child access.
Scott said: “I held it together with the old ‘man up’ rubbish for a long time, but once I started to get some support, it opened my eyes and I wanted to go and help more lads.”
The club has expanded at an exponential rate since the very first walk, which involved just Scott and one other. Now, there are more than 300 members, with a number of walks taking place across seven boroughs.
A Rickmansworth resident and Proper Blokes member encouraged Scott to start a group in the town. They hope to host their first walk in September of this year.
Scott said: “We try and create a safe environment. Lads that want to talk about specific issues can, but if they don’t want to talk about anything that’s bothering them and just want to be in the company of like-minded people, that’s fine too. Most of the things we talk about are what normal groups of lads would talk about anyway, but we have that added knowledge that if you did need to talk about something, you can, rather than bottling it up.”
All men aged 18 and over are welcome. You can find out more at their website or get in touch with Scott at theproperblokesclub@gmail.com
