FASHIONISTA: Kings Langley teen overcomes challenges to exhibit fashion designs

A teen who has overcome personal challenges to pursue a passion for fashion is currently hosting an exhibition at Kings Langley Community Library.

Shira Avron, 17, who is autistic, left school at the age of 14 due to the overwhelming challenges she faced. During lockdown, however, she found purpose in the joy of being creative.

After completing her Level 3 Diploma in Fashion at West Herts College, Shira was invited to display her work at the library from Monday, July 10, for the whole village to see.

Speaking to Kings News, Shira said she is really proud of her exhibition and is looking forward to studying fashion at university this September.

She said: “I’ve always been creative. Before I left school due to anxiety, I loved art and anything creative. I went to college to study photography, but I needed something more, and fashion is an area I’ve always been interested in. I did that for two years and it was the best course ever.

“It was so broad; I learned about making garments, but also fashion marketing and branding.”

Shira’s mum Nikki said the whole family are beyond proud with the exhibition, which is “extra special” after what they have been through.

She said: “It’s so incredibly hard to navigate the services to support someone with autism; she had to leave mainstream school at the age of 14 and I really worried about whether she was going to get back into education.

“I’m really incredibly proud of her as a mum. If young people with autism saw the exhibition, they could see that even when things are hard, there is hope and it can turn itself around.”

The exhibition is available to view at the library in The Nap until Saturday, August 19.
