PROMOTING HAPPINESS: Mental health charity based in Pinner visits schools to boost pupils’ wellbeing

Published on: 25th March 2025   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Pinner-based charity is helping schoolchildren to express their emotions in a healthy way.

In 2017, Molly Russell, a student from Pinner, died from an act of self-harm after suffering from the negative effects of online content.

Founded by Molly’s father, Ian Russell MBE, the Molly Rose Foundation (MRF) focuses on suicide prevention, particularly among young people under 25, by helping them to connect with the support and practical advice they might need.

Flying the flag for Children’s Mental Health Week in February, MRF visited six schools in six days to deliver their ‘My Bag of Happiness’ programme.

The programme aims to boost children’s wellbeing by helping children to reflect on happy memories and gain strength to think positively in difficult situations.

Almost 3,000 colourful bags were distributed after supporters donated £1,156 to the initiative. The bags include an MRF pencil, luggage label, stickers, Post-it notes, bracelet and Where to Find Help card.

MRF travelled as far as Guildford and Hampshire and it is hoped they will be able to roll out the initiative even further afield next year.

MRF shared that the initiative received fantastic feedback from the schools which took part.

Masumah Mujaddedi, from Paiwand Saturday School, said: “The session was insightful and engaging, focusing on managing emotions and maintaining a positive mindset.

“Lisa created a welcoming and supportive environment, encouraging open discussions and meaningful participation. The interactive activity, Bag of Happiness, made the learning experience both enjoyable and impactful. Overall, it was a valuable and empowering experience.”

Teachers and parents were also encouraged to print out MRF-designed Know Yourself & Grow Yourself diaries, which encourage children to record things which they are grateful for, acts of kindness they have completed, what they have learned, and exercises in recognising emotions and expressing themselves.
