The Deputy Prime Minister visited Radlett’s mental health hospital to announce that his party’s next election manifesto would include a pledge to raise research spending by £50million by 2020. Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, made the announcement on his visit to the new state-of-the-art Kingfisher Court at the Kinsley Green site earlier this week. Mr Clegg said: “My ambition is that we should understand mental health just as well as we understand physical health. “I want us to be able to talk about, analyse and treat depression just as we treat diabetes. For far too long mental health has been a bit of a taboo subject – yet it affects one in four people in this country.” Mental health is accounted for 23 per cent of the UK’s disease burden on society which included all diseases and health conditions but only received six per cent of total medical research funding.
