Post office thieves thwarted by brave owner

Published on: 20th September 2018   |   By: Dean Shaw   |   Category: Uncategorized

A brave post office owner defended his family and business to scare off burglars who had broken into his Shenley store.

Dayaram Nakrani runs the post office in Shenley on London Road and in the early hours on Thursday, September 6 he and his wife were woken by a noise coming from the store.

Immediately Dayaram’s wife called 999 as he challenged them and shouted to the burglars that “police are on their way” before the thieves departed the scene.

The owner’s quick thinking and brave actions meant that the intruders only managed to steal a few bottles of vodka and whisky as they were unsuccessful in taking the cigarettes.

However, significant damage was caused and it meant the store had to remain closed for several hours as police started their investigation.

With the support of CCTV, that investigation was quickly up and running, as Hertfordshire Constabulary confirmed a manhunt was underway for two men who are known to them.

Dayaram told MyRadlettandShenleyNews: “The two thieves broke the shop window with a pick axe, at around 2.30am.

“On hearing the bang from the glass breaking, my wife called 999 and I climbed out of the bedroom window on to the flat roof and shouted down at the thieves in a bid to scare them away.

“Initially we felt angry and upset, especially as this was the second time in two years. Since then we have calmed down, just getting on and sorting things out. We are now trying to sort out the paper work required by the insurance company and getting quotes for the repair.

“The village has been really supportive and caring, which drives us to get up again and start trading.”

The post office’s owner also received support from the community on social media.

Martin Taylor said: “Those responsible deserve all they get. Well done to the owner for being brave and protecting his family and business.”

Whilst Shiram Akbar said: “Terrible that this has happened again but what more reason to support our local store. Let’s hope the police can catch the low lives who did this.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Police were called at 2.30am today to reports of a burglary at the Post Office in London Road, Shenley.

“It was reported that offender(s) gained entry to the premises by smashing the front window. They attempted to steal cigarettes but were disturbed and left the scene in a vehicle in the direction of Well End.

“If you witnessed what happened, or saw a vehicle leaving the scene, please call 101 quoting crime reference 41/34150/18.”
