Bushey Heath Primary School has started a new initiative to promote reading for pleasure, outside of the curriculum.
The school has converted a food vending machine to stock books and filled it up with interesting titles, both current and classic, for children of all ages.
Bushey Heath is now looking for local companies and individuals to donate or sponsor the book vending machine to keep it stocked up with fiction and non-fiction books.
Joel Moody, Teacher at Bushey Heath said: “We are aiming the project at vulnerable children and low-income families who may not be able to purchase their own books. Children who complete a great piece of work or do something out of the ordinary receive a gold token which they can exchange for a book.
“Reading opens so many doors for the future and helps the children develop new vocabulary. Books help us learn and discover new things and play such an important role from childhood to adulthood.”
Children are encouraged to gift their vending machine books to other children when they are finished with them to further spread the joy of reading and allow as many children as possible to access books that they can keep.
