PICTURE PERFECT: Self-taught artist from Watford named among the winners of prestigious prize

A Watford resident has been honoured with a prestigious art prize after being chosen from 6,000 entries across the globe.

Toulla Hadjigeourgiou, who is a professional artist and tutor based in the town, was among 50 people to receive the British Art Prize 2022.

The competition offers exposure and publicity to the winning artists, whose work was also featured in an exhibition in London.

Toulla sold her first painting to an art publisher when she was only 17 years old, which went on to be featured on the set of Only Fools and Horses.

Her work has now featured in private collections across the globe.

Speaking about the award, Toulla said she was grateful to be recognised amongst so many talented artists.

She said: “I got into art when I was a child as I liked drawing; by age 12, my parents had bought me my first oil painting set. There was no going back after that.

“Receiving the prize surprised me; I haven’t entered competitions for years. I entered the competition and then completely forgot about it. It was a lovely evening.”

Toulla now dedicates her time to both commissions and teaching.

She added: “I didn’t go to art school and am a self-taught artist. For about 25 years, I have been doing a lot of commissions, mostly of pets, peoples and buildings.

“My main interest is buildings and teaching from my art studio.”
