A Pinner school pupil has been named runner up in an international art competition in a painting which captured his role mode, Malala Yousafzai.

Om Uday Irniraya, who goes to Buckingham Prep School, succeeded in the iart 2022 competition ran by the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS), which received more than 160 entries.

Entries to the competition ranged from portraits of parents and friends to David Attenborough, Enid Blyton, Michelle Obama and the NHS.

Speaking about deciding to paint Malala, Om said: “My role model is Malala Yousafzai, she set an example to others around the world for her determination and journey for human rights. Hats off to you Malala, I hope to one day be like you.”

Christopher King, chief executive officer of IAPS, congratulated all the students which took part in the competition.

He said: “We say it every year, but the quality and creativity of artwork we receive each year never fails to impress us.

“This year we wanted to tap into what has inspired the children most over the course of COVID-19, and it’s been humbling to see portraits of friends who have encouraged them to be themselves, parents who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic, and popular celebrities in sport, literature, art and environmental activism all coming through.

“We’ve been inspired reviewing the entries this year, and we truly believe the competition is a valuable way to encourage creativity and imagination within students.”

The iart 2022 prizegiving event was held for families and teachers at St Ethelburga’s, Bishopsgate, this month.
