RUGBY RIDERS: Croxley rugby club members cycle from home ground to Paris in charity ride

A team of rugby players rode from their home ground in Croxley all the way to Paris as part of a charity bike ride.

Eight members of Chess Valley RFC took part in the gruelling cycling challenge from June 3 to 6, which took them from the Guild of Sport ground in the village all the way to the Stade Français.

Five support crew also joined the team with a minibus packed with supplies, as the team visited 25 other local rugby clubs across both the UK and France along the ride, to commemorate Chess Valley’s ongoing 25th anniversary celebrations and celebrate grassroots sport.

When they finally finished the 255-mile trek, the team then played a rugby match against French side Brive.

The cycle ride has raised more than £16,000 for its three chosen charities: Cure Parkinson’s Whizz-Kids and the Matt Santana Rugby Foundation.

Will Cook, team member and CEO of Cure Parkinson’s, said: “This journey was joyous, painful, hilarious and extremely difficult at various times. The teamwork and support within the group kept us going – truly an embodiment of the rugby maxim of TREDS – as did the knowledge that we were raising money for these important charities.

“The support we received from each local club was humbling, and we were greeted with warmth and often refreshments! This adventure truly celebrated the rugby community coming together.”
