A new star-lit cinematic experience is coming to Watford town centre later this month, with Pedal Powered Cinema.
The bicycle-powered cinema is completely off-grid, with the screen’s electricity generated by cyclists as they ride. The event will span two nights, May 28 and 29 and will take place in the town centre event space. Pedal Powered Cinema is part of Watford’s Big Events, the town’s annual collection of events intended to help residents get outside and make the most of the summer.
On Saturday, May 28, there will be a showing of Rocketman, the beloved musical biopic about the life of singer-songwriter Elton John, and Sunday will feature Step Up 2: The Streets, the classic 2008 dance movie.
There will be a number of bikes for people to ride, and although viewers won’t need to stay on for the whole film, enough power will need to be produced to keep the film running. Attendees don’t even need to hop on a bike to enjoy the film, as there will be plenty of space for to just sit and relax. Due to the outdoor nature of the event, the films cannot be shown until sunset, and will therefore begin at approximately 9.15pm.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “Pedal Powered Cinema is one of the first in an exciting line up of Watford’s Big Events. Events like this are a great chance for Watford residents to try something unique and interactive, all while giving them the chance to enjoy the warm summer evenings. I look forward to seeing everyone there, pedalling hard!”
