‘MONUMENTAL ACHIEVEMENT’: Incredible Abbots Langley couple celebrate 70 years of marriage

Every milestone in a marriage is impressive, but to reach 70 years happily wed is a quite an astonishing achievement.

Abbots Langley residents Maureen Cutler, 89, and Jim Cutler, 90, have done exactly that.

Jim was aged 17 and working at a garage when he met Maureen on Watford High Street. They quickly hit it off and decided to marry.

As Maureen was under 21, Jim had to ask her dad’s permission. Luckily, he was able to gain Maureen’s family’s approval.

Jim then had to complete his military service, but the pair stayed in touch via numerous letters, which they still have today.

After he returned from his military service, the pair married in February.

“It snowed on our wedding day,” Jim told Abbots News.

After marrying, Maureen and Jim moved to Abbots Langley in the late 1950s, and have lived there ever since. Six years later, they welcomed a new addition to their family, their first child, Penny. They later had a second daughter, Jane.

For eldest daughter Penny, it was vital to commemorate her parents’ landmark anniversary.

She said: “I wanted to mark the occasion. It’s a big thing really; it’s a monumental achievement.”

Maureen told Abbots News: “We still get on well. We keep each other going and we keep each other company.”

The inspiring couple will now set their sights on their 75th anniversary.
