Hemel Hempstead residents are being warned about a new scam that has made its way to the town’s car parks.
Recently, a scam has been discovered where devices are attached to ticket machines which can ‘swallow’ victims’ credit cards
Dacorum Borough Council posted on social media: “Please be aware of the following parking scam which has recently been carried out within the Water Gardens (North) Lower Deck car park in Hemel Hempstead.
“A customer has had their bank card taken while using a ‘Pay & Park’ payment machine within the Water Gardens (North) Lower Deck car park. A person pretending to assist encouraged the customer to use their bank card to pay for their parking session.
“It is believed a magnetic box was attached to the payment machine to steal the bank card without the customer realising. The customer believed that their card had been swallowed by the machine and when the customer had left, the person removed the magnetic box with the bank card inside.”
The council is reminding residents that parking payment machines will never swallow bank cards, and to not engage with anyone advising them how to use their bank cards.
