‘ON A HIGH’: Women of Croxley Royal British Legion look back on 100 years of history

Published on: 19th July 2025   |   By: Ellie Rose   |   Category: Featured

One hundred years ago, a group of residents formed the Women’s Section of the Croxley Green Royal British Legion, and started a legacy of community engagement, charity and friendship.

Initially, members met in each other’s houses, as well as at Mrs Davies haberdasher’s shop situated in New Road. Social gatherings were held at the Territorial premises opposite All Saints’ Church.

It was not until 1956 that the current premises of the Royal British Legion on Watford Road was built.

Recently, the committee celebrated the remarkable anniversary with a parade of their standard, a hot meal, entertainment, and a dance.

The Croxley Green section “is currently on a high”, having been presented with three cups at the last county annual conference and being awarded the Princess Royal Cup at this year’s annual conference in Harrogate.

The award is presented to the branch which has raised the most donations for the Women’s Section Benevolent Fund.

The committee would like to welcome new members of any age, but especially “younger, fresher blood to keep the group productive, successful and in the modern century”.

The organisation shared with Croxley News: “Anyone is eligible to join the Women’s Section and it’s not just limited to women – men are most welcome too. By joining, you can be part of an organisation that provides essential support to all members of the Armed Forces community.”

For more information, call chairman Denise Coleman on 07986 393173, come along to the next bi-monthly dance on Saturday, August 2, or to the next monthly coffee morning on Thursday, August 7, from 10.30am until 12pm.
