Pressing the pause button

Published on: 4th April 2019   |   By: Nik Allen

I spent this past weekend glued to my sofa.

I wasn’t ill, wasn’t binging on Netflix or slobbing out.

I was recovering from the past two months which have been relentless as we prepared for our biennial My Local Hero 2019 awards ceremony which took place on Friday at The Grove in Watford.

I was knackered, but elated. The painstaking preparations for an event with more than 350 people had taken its toll.

But I also needed the chillout time to reflect on what we got right and where we can improve when we do it again in 2021.

The feedback from guests and sponsors has been great but I’m a big believer in not resting on your laurels. And with the help of my fantastic team we are analysing everything we did in the run up to the event and on the evening itself.

Once all the monies are in we will be looking at giving sizeable amounts of money to the four charities the evening supported.

Seeking to constantly improve goes across all aspects of our business.

We’d never claim we’re perfect, far from it, but we are driven to do better, to think bigger and come up with new ways to support the communities and advertisers we serve.

And reflecting and thinking about the things we do in business and in life is underestimated.

We live in a 24/7 around the clock full speed society and sometimes we can all benefit from pressing pause.

I got back to the office on Monday with a spring in my step and a head full of things we can introduce into our business that will improve what we do.

When was the last time you sat down, to do nothing apart from give yourself the time and space to think?

It could be the most important ‘work’ you do this year.

Thanks for reading.

Nik
