A young Ricky schoolboy and aspiring F1 driver has won a national competition.
Ethan Lloyd, a student at Christchurch School, participated in the 8-month-long race series, the 2024 MSUK Rye House Kart Championship. At just 9 years old, Ethan raced in the cadet MicroMax class in his own number 66 kart against other racers aged eight to 12.
The karts have 125cc engines capable of 60 miles per hour on slick or wet tyres, with the competition taking place on the challenging Rye House kart circuit. A total score is counted after eight rounds, with the driver with the most points securing a spot on the final podium.
Speaking to Chorleywood News, Ethan’s dad Daniel explained: “This was Ethan’s first year in the cadet class. As a novice driver, expectations were limited, especially as I had to learn to be his mechanic to save money!
“The first race in the championship showed the mechanics’ lack of experience when a poorly fastened wheel detached while Ethan was travelling at speed down the main straight, putting him out of the race and out of the points!
“Luckily, he was not hurt, but it meant he was on the back foot and had to perform in every race afterwards to compete with more experienced drivers!”
Despite the setback, Ethan battled on, and on September 15 finished round 8 with a grand total of 1495 points, securing the top spot with an 81-point lead.
Daniel continued: “After a successful maiden year in the class, Ethan will spend the winter with continued practice and development and looks forward to racing in a new national championship in 2025!”
