A school in Bushey is celebrating the achievements of students and alumni at two international music competitions in recent months.

A former pupil of the Purcell School for Young Musicians on Aldenham Road, Yumeka Nakagawa became the XXIX Clara Haskil International Piano Competition winner in Switzerland on September 3.

Yumeka was awarded 25,000 Swiss francs (equivalent to approximately £19,800 GBP) as well as the chance to perform at the Vevey Spring Classic in 2022.

In addition, Yumeka won the Competition’s Audience Award, as well as the Coup de Coeur Special Prize from a jury of music students. Yumeka was educated at The Purcell School under the guidance of Head of Keyboard William Fong.

William Fong commented: “This is a huge achievement. My experience of Yumeka is one of a highly motivated pianist with a great passion for music. It is wonderful to see how she has flourished even since leaving The Purcell School a little over a year ago.”

More success came a day later on September 4 for Year 13 pianist Magdalene Ho and alumna violinist Lina Jukneviciute, who won their respective categories, while Year 9 violinist Hana Shah received a Diploma and Special Prize for talented interpretation.

Magdalene Ho has been playing the piano since she was four years old and joined The Purcell School in 2013, where she continues to study under Patsy Toh. Lina Jukneviciute moved to The Purcell School in 2018.
