A Bovingdon man has appeared in court today (Wednesday, December 15) charged with the murder of his mother and the attempted murder of his father.

Ashley Howse, 35, From Bovingdon, appeared at Luton Crown Court via a video link from Peterborough Prison, where he is being held.

He was charged with the murder of his mother, Julia Howse and the attempted murder of his father, Richard Howse.

Police were called to the family’s home in Austins Mead in Bovingdon just before 3.20pm last Saturday, where they found a woman with serious injuries.

Paramedics attended, but she died a short time later.

Mr Howse was charged with the murder on Monday and also with the attempted murder of his Richard Howse during the same incident.

Today in a preliminary hearing before Judge Lynn Tayton QC, Mr Howse of Austin’s Mead Bovingdon spoke only to confirm his name.

No pleas were taken to the charges that he faces. He is next due to appear at Luton Crown Court on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 and a trial date was set for May 25 next year.

Detective Chief Inspector Sam Khanna, the Senior Investigating Officer, said: “Julia’s family and friends have suffered an unimaginable loss and they continue to be supported by our specialist Family Liaison Officers.

“Bovingdon is a close-knit community, and we know this tragedy has come as a huge shock to all the residents – some of whom know the family personally.

“This is understandably a hugely difficult time for Julia’s family, and we firmly request that they are given privacy to grieve by the media.”
