A community group which helps feed the homeless will soon to serve its one millionth meal thanks to its team of volunteers, including several from Stanmore.
The group was formed in 2017 and serves the homeless every Friday at Charing Cross. They feed around 300 people each week and will hit the milestone million this summer.
Originating from Shree Jalaram Mandir, a Hindu temple and community centre in Greenford, the group also serves lunch to more than 250 people every day at the temple and makes regular food donations to support other local projects.
The temple also regularly collects surplus food from numerous shops through its partnership with food charity FareShare.
Dr Mansukh Morjaria, trustee and head of the outreach programme at Shree Jalaram Mandir, said: “It’s incredible how well it’s gone and we’re always looking for volunteers to help us grow.
“We have 80 volunteers, with several from Stanmore. Between us, we’ve made 15,321 collections from supermarkets and given 400 tonnes of food.
“We carried on during COVID and produced goody bags to hand out to those that needed help. We also provided food to frontline workers such as those at the NHS.”
