Methodist church to celebrate 140 years

Published on: 29th March 2018   |   By: Jason Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Abbots Langley Methodist Church will be full of celebration this year as it marks its 140th anniversary.

Several events are planned for the big year, from a garden party to a harvest service. So far, the events will take place from this month running until at least November.

The history of the church all started in 1872 when Matthew Timberlake and family came to live in the village. He was a staunch Methodist and was one of the founding members of the Methodist Society in Abbots Langley. Services were initially held in the open air on Kitters Green, then in The Bricklayers Arms public house (now the Dry Cleaners next to the Henderson Hub).

A church spokesperson said: “As far as we know, Methodism came to Abbots Langley early in the 19th century. As the numbers grew they began to hold open air services on Kitters Green which is directly in front of the present church.

“In 1878 a plot of land was purchased measuring 180ft x 40ft including sheds and stables. The shed became the Mission Room where services and later a Sunday School were held. In spring 1881 work began on building the chapel where it is today.”

Today’s Methodists in Abbots Langley continue to build on their heritage and seek to maintain and develop the premises so that they continue to glorify God through their worship and service to this community.

The church has moved into the 21st century with internet access, its own website at www.abbotslangleymethodist.org.uk and a Facebook page at ‘Abbots Langley Methodist Church’.

An updated booklet on the History of the Church is now available at £2 a copy.

The first event starts on April 15 at 10am with a Cradle Roll Reunion Service. If you were baptised at the church then this service will be for you.

Other events include a Sunday Lunch on June 10, followed by an Outside Service on the Green. There will also be a Garden Party on July 7, a Harvest Service and Lunch on October 14 and a quiz night with fish and chip supper on November 10.
