A Hemel Hempstead footballer has proven that determination and hard work can get you onto one of the world’s biggest stages after making his Premier League debut.
Brandon Austin began his footballing career in the Hemel Comets U6 team, before signing to Tottenham Hotspur at age eight. As a child, the keeper attended The Cavendish School. He excelled on the football pitch and the basketball court, and played in the district championship-winning team.
On Saturday, January 4, the talented 26-year-old player reached a new milestone when he made his Premier League debut for Tottenham Hotspur against Newcastle United.
Despite suffering a 2-1 loss, Austin earned himself Player of the Match.
Jason Goodliffe, Austin’s former coach at Hemel Comets, told Hemel news: “Twenty years ago, I started out coaching my Hemel Comets U6 team.
“One training session, one of our better players turned up with a pair of GK gloves he had been bought for his birthday and asked if he could go in goal. Of course I obliged; he was only six years old after all.
“Fast forward 20 years and imagine how proud I felt seeing him make his Premier League debut. Congratulations Brandon Austin for showing that hard work, dedication and patience pay off.”
Austin said: “Not the result we wanted but we will keep working. Nevertheless, a proud day for me personally. Thank you for all of your support.”
The talented goalkeeper’s successes didn’t stop there, as he also made his Europa League debut on Thursday, January 23.
Austin had a nailbiter of a game, helping Tottenham Hotspur’s victory over Hoffenheim 3-2, and securing the London side’s spot in at least the knockout play-off round of the competition.
