Two young sailors took part in the Cadet racing dinghy National and European championships last month.
Jack and Zoe, who are members of Rickmansworth Sailing Club’s youth and junior section, attended the championships in Torquay, where 69 boats competed in the national championships and 83 in the European.
Every day, prizes were awarded to the boats which were placed in races the previous day, and social events held each evening. Jack and Zoe received a prize for being the first team from Rickmansworth Sailing Club to sail in the event in recent years.
Being part of an international sporting event was a great experience for Jack and Zoe. They are accustomed to racing against boats on their home lake, so jostling on a start line with more than 80 others was quite different.
Zoe described how noisy it was, with the sound of boats tacking this way and that, and shouts of “starboard” and “leeward” around them.
