There is approximately 4 miles of slow traffic on the M1 Northbound after a gaping hole appeared between Junction 4 and Junction 5, near Watford.
Highways England say they have worked hard to keep one lane open on the road.
Their workforce is currently making urgent repairs to the carriageway.
