‘LOSING OUT’: Residents speak out against plans to restrict access to games area in Croxley

After months of dodging more than footballs, Croxley Green Parish Council made the decision to restrict access to a games area due to ongoing dog fouling.

On Wednesday, July 9, the council informed residents that weekday access to the Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) would now be restricted.

Now, access to the “valued community facility” will only be available from 7.30am to 4.30pm on Mondays to Thursdays. On the weekends, the site will be open as usual from 7.30am on Fridays.

The council shared: “Despite repeated reminders and the importance of this space for families, children, and local sports groups, we continue to face unacceptable levels of dog mess – including the recent incident shown in these images.

“This is not only unpleasant, but a health and safety concern for all users.

“This decision has not been made lightly. We are committed to keeping this facility clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone. Please help us protect it.”

However, residents have kicked back over the timing of the closure, arguing that it isn’t fair for children enjoying their summer break and suggesting that cameras would act as a better deterrent.

One resident shared: “There are so few facilities that teenagers can use and enjoy… the teens are losing out through other people’s behaviour.”

Another added: “It was absolutely disgusting in there few times my kids went to play… not sure how the restricted times will help though. It’s the only one place where older kids can go and have fun.”

The council responded: “We will be reviewing our decision and hope that this closure is enough of a deterrent to discourage this public hygiene concern, and hope that your much-loved facility can be fully reopened for public use in the near future.”

On Tuesday, July 22, the council shared a follow-up on the situation. A public notice shared: “Highlighting the issue and temporarily closing the MUGA has effectively helped deter and mitigate the problem, which is no longer a cause for concern. As such, the MUGA will now remain permanently open.”
