Lord Rosser Visits Northwood College for Girls

Published on: 20th October 2017   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category:

Last month, Northwood College for Girls’ Sixth Form welcomed Lord Rosser who gave a talk and Q&A session as part of the Peers for Schools programme which encourages Lords to visit schools and discuss their roles in politics.

Lord Rosser told the girls about his position as Labour peer in the House of Lords and how he was elected.  Explaining many of the myths regarding the House of Lords, Lord Rosser touched upon the portrayal of the Lords in the media and contrasted this perception against how the house sits on a daily basis. Lord Rosser took the girls through the political process of writing legislature and focused on the role of the House of Lords as the “revising chamber” opposed to the House of Commons.  With many budding feminists in the audience, Lord Rosser was questioned about the role of women in the House of Lords and he went on to explain that women, while still underrepresented, do play a very active part with a current female leader of the House of Lords and a current female Lord Speaker in place.
