LOOKING BACK: Hatch End Scouts dig up time capsule from more than 20 years ago

A Scout group from Hatch End have dug up a time capsule planted outside the Hatch End Arts Centre more than 20 years ago.

On May 21, 2000, Cubs from the 1st Hatch End Scout Group buried the time capsule in the sundial garden containing items to represent the millennium.

The idea was to dig up the capsule in 2025 but with this year marking the centenary year for 1st Hatch End, the group thought it would be fitting to do it now.

On May 21, group Scout leader, David Poole, was joined by more than 50 members from the group, past and present gathered to dig up the capsule.

A spokesperson for the group said: “It’s probably fair to say that some of the contents had stood the test of time better than others. The Scout badge was pristine but some of the paper-based items had not fared so well.

“The Cubs still had more work to do. They had prepared another time capsule representing the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and 1st Hatch End Scout Group’s centenary anniversary. As well as current newspaper articles, this one includes a 1st Hatch End centenary scarf, platinum jubilee badge and letters intended for the Cubs of 2047 when it is hoped the time capsule will next be revealed.”
