LOCKED UP: Driver jailed after paralysing firefighter cyclist

A 29-year-old man has been jailed for dangerous driving for more than three years after he hit a cyclist and left him paralysed.

On August 18, 2023, Samuel Powell was on his way to work travelling northbound along the A41 Northwestern Avenue in Garston at the junction with the A405. This is when he collided with a 25-year-old firefighter.

During a two-day trial at St Albans Crown Court in September, Powell denied the offence but was eventually found guilty. He was jailed on October 30.

Detective Constable James McAlister, who led the investigation, said: “The victim’s enthusiasm to find the positives in life is nothing short of inspiring.

“Powell’s denial of the offences meant the victim was forced to go through the ordeal of a criminal trial, and I hope today’s result goes some way in providing closure.”

The former firefighter will rely on a wheelchair for life after being paralysed from below his belly button.  Determined to stay active, he has since joined a wheelchair triathlon club as he continues his rehabilitation.
