Rickmansworth resident Paul Johnson received a prestigious award from Royal Yachting Association’s (RYA) in January, for his commitment to Rickmansworth Sailing Club.

RSC revealed the news on their Facebook page: “We are incredibly pleased to announce that long-term club member, Paul Johnson, has been honoured with an RYA Lifetime Commitment Award. In normal times Paul would have enjoyed a formal presentation at a gala event laid on by the RYA but tonight Paul will be presented with his award virtually using Zoom. Our commodore, Jonathan Carter, will welcome and introduce the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, and past Commodore of RSC, Vice Admiral Alan Richards CB and Doug MacEwan, Chair of RYA Eastern Region.”

Paul joined RSC nearly 25 years ago and over that time has taken on roles including Commodore, Membership Secretary, Club Secretary, Solo Class Captain, Assistant Dinghy Instructor and a club Racing Coach with a RYA First Aid qualification.

He said at the virtual awards night: “There are many others at the Sailing Club who put in so much time and effort, it seems unfair to single out one person. Every member contributes something: a boat on the water, admin support, maintenance work, money etc; some are able or willing to do more than others but every contribution, large or small, helps. Thanks again for this Award.”

Sarah Treseder, RYA Chief Executive, said: “This year more than ever before we have seen our club volunteers come together and work tirelessly to ensure members can continue to sail. The generosity and dedication of each of the RYA Volunteer Award recipients are simply outstanding and it’s a pleasure to be able to recognise these winners through this award.”
