KNOCKED OUT: St Albans City FC exit FA Cup after disastrous tie

Published on: 22nd September 2022   |   By: Darius Morgan   |   Category: St Albans City F.C

St Albans City FC have crashed out of the FA Cup after their second-round qualification tie with AFC Sudbury.

The Saints were overwhelming favourites heading into the home match on September 17, being two divisions above their opponents.

Sudbury opened the scoring with just ten minutes of normal time to go, but George Morrall kept St Albans’ dreams alive with a confidently finished equaliser in injury time.

In the replay three days later, the Saints were 2-0 down within an hour. Hope reignited after Sudbury went down to 10 men, but despite having a lot of the ball St Albans were unable to convert, and the game finished 2-1.

Pressure will now mount on manager Ian Allison, who was celebrating his 300th game in charge.

Allison claimed that he and his coaching team had done everything they could do prepare the team, and it was up to the players “to do their jobs”.

He said: “We were not good enough, simple as that. We’re going to have to change some personnel.”
