Penniwells Riding For Disabled Centre in Elstree has officially welcomed two new projects, including an upgraded home for the centre’s horse simulator and a sensory trail.
Eddie, the horse simulator, will now be housed in a larger room, making him usable by a new group of riders who are not able to ride on real horses. A hoist has also been installed to further boost accessibility for wheelchair users.
Meanwhile, the new all-weather sensory track will allow riders, volunteers and ponies to benefit from being outside and engaging in a range of activities.
Both projects came about through community support. A fundraiser that collected £30,000 was responsible for Eddie’s new home, which included £12,500 of match funding from Sport England. The new track was donated by Foley’s Equestrian Surfaces Ltd after Penniwells won a competition held by the company.
RADLETTnews spoke to Penniwells’ Laura Goss and Sarah Healing.
They said: “Projects with this level of investment that create such amazing opportunities could be once in a lifetime for Penniwells. A huge thank you to Larfoot, InRail, Durkan Homes and Cathy Leahy.”
Laura added: “Day-to-day at Penniwells, we see such a positive environment. The centre is full of people breaking barriers, doing the impossible. Some of the people who arrive here would never have thought they could get on a horse but look at them now. Sarah and the team really do work miracles.”
