JOIN IN: Community invited to charity’s upcoming open day in Nash Mills

A Nash Mills-based charity is set to host an open day next month to offer the opportunity for the community to find out more from volunteers.

The Waterways Experience (WExp), based on the Grand Union Canal, operates three wheelchair accessible canal boats and runs trips every day of the year except Christmas Day.

From 10am to 4pm on Saturday, April 15, the charity will be hosting an open day at Nash Mills Recreation Centre, Red Lion Lane. Residents are invited to chat to volunteers to learn more about the charity and also take a trip on one of the boats, with trips running every 30 minutes.

A spokesperson for the charity said that everyone is welcome to volunteer both full- and part-time.

They said: “We believe it’s our volunteers that make a difference, whether crewing the boats or helping with the on-shore operational support.

“We are having an open day to showcase what WExp is all about and for potential volunteers to see what we do and how we do it. We hope that they will love us so much that they won’t be able to wait to join!

“The visitor centre will be open with refreshments served all day and where assembly will be organised for the boat trips. Our friendly volunteers will be around all day to answer any questions and talk about why they love volunteering with us.”

The charity also offers a number of seven-day Enable residential canal trips for up to six young people with special needs on each trip. Any type of special need is considered, and there are six experienced volunteer crew on board.
