An extremely rare Star Wars figure has been sold for more than £26,000 by Kings Langley auctioneers.
The Palitoy Jawa figure with a vinyl cape was estimated to be worth around £15,000 by Excalibur Auctions and went for a remarkable £26,670 including buyer’s premium at the auction on July 22.
Marvel’s former art director brought the figure into the auctioneers in Primrose Hill after finding them in a drawer and was unaware of their wealth.
Speaking to Kings News, Jonathan Torode, who auctioned the toy, said the figure was not seen in the UK until around seven or eight years ago.
He said: “For a long time, there was a theory that none of the figures had got to the UK; because the owner was the art director of Marvel UK, they had them delivered directly. He opened eight out of the collection of 12 and the others he just took home and forgot about.
“There is a whole dedicated collectors army out there of people who collect these, they will hunt these down. There was one sold for a similar amount three years ago. We were happy with what it achieved.”
Jonathan explained that if anyone is wondering how much their Star Wars figures could be worth, to pay attention to the back of the card.
He added: “In terms of what people should be looking for, it’s got to be sealed on its original card, and quick way of identifying an early figure is that it has a 12 back and only has photos of 12 figures, which was the complete range when they first launched.”
