INSPIRATIONAL: Hemel Hempstead boxer returns to the ring after cancer battle

An inspirational boxer from Hemel Hempstead, who defied doctors’ expectations after being diagnosed with cancer, has made an emotional return to the ring.

Oliver Famili, 34, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma – a rare cancer usually seen in older people – six years ago. Overcoming a bleak prognosis and being told by doctors it was unlikely he would ever be able to fight again, he made a heroic return to the sport at the O2 Arena on Saturday, May 13.

He took on experienced fighter Black Rock who, despite winning the bout, called Oliver “the real winner” and an “inspiration”.

The cancer left him wheelchair-bound with 11 fractures in his spine. He then took part in complex cell treatment which was successful and put him in remission in September 2022.

He has since gone on to become incredibly fit and make his epic comeback at the O2.

Oliver said: “It was an incredible experience, and it meant way more to me than just the fight.

“In the early stages of my illness, I told my doctor I will get fit and fight in the O2. They laughed it off and said: ’One step at a time but we love your determination.’ I made that come true.

“It gives hope to so many others battling cancer and going through hard treatments, and even gives inspiration to other people going through their own life struggles that you can push through anything.

“During the fight, I caught Black Rock with some good shots, but unfortunately, I didn’t have the energy to follow through with the second phase.

“I know that with more hard work and dedication, I can come back stronger than ever and do and achieve anything I want.”

Oliver is also the founder of GOLD Pest Control, a local company that uses non-toxic solutions for pest problems. As part of the company’s commitment to the environment, they conduct regular litter picks at locations nominated by the general public via social media.
