Roger Millard (web edit)A “village character” from Radlett who lost his life last year died of natural causes, an inquest heard yesterday (Tuesday, February 18). Roger Millard, a resident at Brookdene House care home on Watling Street, died at Watford General Hospital on July 9, 2013. Roger was an avid supporter of Arsenal Football Club and was well known in the village for his regular trips to watch matches at his local pub. He suffered from schizophrenia and had resided in the care home since 2006. Roger was admitted to Watford General a couple of days before his death due to serious constipation. He had often struggled with is bowel movements while at the home and regularly visited Red House Surgery in the village. He was treated and managed to use the toilet but fell ill again the next day. A CT scan revealed that he still had faecal problems and doctors also discovered his intestines had become blocked. On July 9, the 66-year-old vomited and became unresponsive. CPR was attempted six times but it was not possible to revive him. Care Home manager Nicola Jones said: “He liked going to the café and the pub. He didn’t drink but he had lots of friends and was very sociable and popular. He had a motor bike and liked going to Brighton with the lads.” Speaking to My Radlett & Shenley News after the inquest, Ms Jones added: “He was such a character; so much so that the manager of the pub came to his funeral. We became very close to him as he was with us for seven years. He was a lovely man.” Hertfordshire Coroner Edward Thomas revealed that the type of medication Roger was taking for his mental illness can cause constipation but recorded a verdict of death by natural causes. Mr Thomas praised the staff at Broookdene House. He said: “I’m satisfied that he was well looked after. He was quite a character and he enjoyed living at the home. “You provided him with a very good quality of life.” Full story to follow in March’s My Radlett & Shenley News.
