A Berkhamsted man is currently in hospital after he was attacked by a shark whilst holidaying in Tobago.
According to local officials, Peter Smith, 64, was attacked at around 9.15am whilst swimming on the island’s northern shore, sustaining serious injuries to his left leg, left arm and stomach due to the incident.
The Tobago House of Assembly stated the animal in question that injured Mr Smith was a bull shark, and he is now in a critical but stable condition at a nearby hospital.
As a result of the incident, the Foreign Office has updated its travel advice to British nationals in Trinidad and Tobago, stating: “Following a shark attack on a tourist at Turtle Beach/Courland Bay on April 24, the Tobago authorities have temporarily closed the Buccoo Reef Marine Park (BRMP) until further notice. This closure is effective immediately and applies to all recreational activities.”
