‘PINCH-ME MOMENT’: Singer-songwriter from Hemel prepares to take to the national stage

This month, HEMELnews spoke to local artist Jarki Monno, aka Mark Johnson, as he prepares for his biggest performance yet.

Mark’s singing journey began when he joined an amateur dramatics club and his school choir.

He explained: “I started songwriting and crafting my artistry. I didn’t know what to do next, so my friend suggested I go to university in Brighton, and that’s where it all took off.”

The Hemel-based artist spent years making connections, working with other local singers and songwriters, and performing gigs across the country.

His hard work has paid off as he is now signed to Marshall Records and has secured his biggest gig yet: performing on the BBC Music Introducing Stage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Luton later this month.

Mark said: “It’s moments like these that you dream of from an early age. It was never really part of the plan, but it’s a sign that I’m going in the right direction.

“It’s so easy to doubt yourself and feel like you’re not getting anywhere, but this is going how I want it to. Just seeing my name on the billboards with the biggest names in music, it’s a pinch-me moment.”

The BBC Music Introducing Stage has elevated artists such as Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, Florence + the Machine, and Raye to international stardom.

Mark continued: “My mum is my rock. Some people couldn’t see it turn out like this, but she’s been the one supporting me since day dot.

“I’m nervous, but I want to lap it up and take it with two hands. I have a couple more festivals before, like The Great Escape in Brighton, but the Big Weekend is the big finale.”
