An information board has been installed at the old pump at the end of Ruislip High Street, near St Martin’s Church.
On Thursday, April 10, the Ruislip, Northwood, and Eastcote Local History Society, which provided the text and images, announced that the board had been installed by Hillingdon Council.
The board reads: “This traditional cast iron pump originally stood in the middle of the road at the junction of Bury Street and Ruislip High Street. It was erected above a public well sunk in 1864 by Charles Page of Uxbridge Moor to supply water to those villagers without access to safe drinking water.
“With the coming of a mains water supply, there was no need for the well and it was decommissioned, but the pump was retained in situ. By the 1970s, it constituted a traffic hazard and was moved. The first site in 1972 was next to Manor Farm Lodge (now public toilets) and then in 1982 it was moved to its present location in the courtyard of Church Cottages now owned by Ruislip Village Trust.
“In 2010, the pump was locally listed in recognition of its historical importance.”
