Some heart-warming stories are coming from AGE UK Dacorum’s partnership with Berkhamsted COVID-19 Mutual Aid Facebook group.
AGE UK Dacorum, which holds regular events for local residents (their latest one pictured above), formed an essential link with the Facebook group at the end of last month and posted an appeal on their page for phone volunteers to come forward.
The charity, which aims to promote the wellbeing of all older people and to help make later life fulfilling and enjoyable, wanted the phone volunteers to speak to vulnerable, isolated people of all ages.
The response to the post was immediate and a number of community-minded people stepped forward, and within days approximately 50 vulnerable isolated people experienced a befriending phone call, resulting in help with some urgent issues like shopping and prescription collection.
These phone calls and ongoing support will continue on a regular basis throughout lockdown, says the charity.
One beneficiary of the new service was the granddaughter of an elderly Berkhamsted resident – she called one of the volunteers as she wanted someone local to deliver her grandma some goods and speak with her, which the granddaughter wasn’t able to do herself because she lives in Dorset.
The granddaughter said to AGE UK Dacorum: “I have a weight lifted off my shoulders. Thoughts of my gran with her favourite coffee and some lemon cake bring me great happiness.
“You guys are doing a great job and it’s amazing that all the way from Dorset I was able to help my gran by contacting you. This page seems so helpful to many. Keep up the good work.”
