Watford FC midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah recently surprised a supporter with a 20-minute phone call as he offered his condolences to an 85-year-old man who has recently lost his wife of 67 years.
William Knight, who is known as Ray, sadly lost his wife Julia in March after she had been suffering with dementia for over five years.
The pair met in 1952 at a fairground and married the next year. They had been together ever since.
Ray, originally from Watford, and Julia have four children and eight grandchildren and have lived in Croxley Green since they got married.
Speaking to WatfordNews, he said: “I’ve got nothing but praise for Chalobah, we had such a nice chat. He really didn’t have to do that but did anyway.
“Going to watch Watford on the weekends with my grandsons has recently been my big day out, so to hear from him in such a tough time was really nice.”
Ray was in his greenhouse when he got the shock call from Chalobah, and the pair spoke about his favourite memories of being a Watford supporter.
Mr Knight continued: “Dementia is a horrible illness, but we as a family were adamant that we didn’t want her going into a care home and that we would look after her ourselves.
“It made things a little easier, I’m a Watford FC season ticket holder and have been a supporter from a very young age.
“My standout memories are the late 50s when Cliff Holton played for us and was bagging goals from everywhere.
“I think Nigel Pearson has come in and the team are above where we should be, he’s doing really well and has brought back a good feeling to the club. I will be returning to Vicarage Road as soon as I can with my grandchildren.”
