The Mayor of Amersham has launched a charity dedicated to helping refugees housed across the Chilterns integrate into the community.
Councillor Mark Roberts attended the launch event for Chiltern Welcomes at The Beacon School in Amersham on Thursday, April 27.
Spearheaded by Mayor Roberts and six other trustees from diverse backgrounds and professions, the charity aims to help refugees settle in to their new area.
Mayor Roberts said: “For me, it’s personal, as a result of my family history. My father was a refugee from Guernsey.”
Chiltern Welcomes will initially focus on helping the many Afghan refugees under government resettlement schemes who are currently in bridging hotels, 20 months on from being evacuated from their home.
They are looking to raise £20,000 for six months’ worth of rent to house two families. Once these funds are repaid through benefits, they will be recycled to help the next two families. The charity is also looking to find work and school places for refugees.
