Heathrow UTC host supersonic car project

Heathrow Aviation Engineering University Technical College (UTC) in Potter Street, Northwood, will next week host the Bloodhound Supersonic Car (SSC) education team.

The Bloodhound SSC Project is a UK-led, global adventure to build a supersonic car that will not only beat the current land speed world record, but smash the 1,000 mph barrier. The Project uses the land speed record attempt to inspire the next generation of young people about science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).  Young people will take part in a series of workshops focussing on aerodynamics, forces, engineering problem solving and building rocket cars.  One half of a replica car has been especially ‘cut-out’ to show students in great detail, how the car has been developed. Bryan Berry, Principal of Heathrow UTC, comments:  “We’re thrilled that the Bloodhound team approached us to spend a few days at our new engineering school in January.  This is a fantastic opportunity for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 students interested in learning more about STEM.  It will be a unique chance to understand more about the engineering challenges the team face in developing this vehicle, in their pursuit of the land speed record.” Key stage 2 and key stage 3 workshops for up to 120 learners per day, will be held on Tuesday 20-Friday January 23.  Schools wanting to attend should contact info@heathrow-utc.org, or call 01923 602130.  Anyone signing up for the next UTC open event on Wednesday January 21, 6-8 pm, will also have a chance to learn about this amazing project in the school’s new £10m building.  Places at the open event are limited and can be booked by visiting: www.heathrow-utc.org/events.
