‘HEART AND SOUL’: Thousands of pounds raised in memory of beloved Amersham resident

More than £5,000 has been raised for the memorial of a local legend, Clair Jones, who passed away on Sunday, September 15.

Clair, who was only 40 at the time of her death, was a pillar in the local community and a driving force behind the White Eagle Club in Amersham.

The club has been left devastated by Clair’s tragic passing. To do their bit to help her grieving family, they set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funds for her memorial.

The page met its £4,000 target within four days and the total continues to climb, standing at more than £5,000 at the time of its closure.

Speaking to Amersham News, Ralph Gowling, club manager and close friend of Clair, said: “She was a great personality and regarded by many as the heart and soul of the club. She will be greatly missed.”

Clair worked at the club for most of her adult life and was a steadfast, friendly face behind the bar.

The White Eagle Club, formerly Amersham Polish Club, was first established in 1982 and was set up to provide a community space for Polish ex-service men who moved over during the Second World War.

The club has now diversified but remains in touch with their Polish roots, hosting a variety of community events in their large hall.

Ralph continued: “Clair would have wanted everything to go on, so we have carried on with our popular Wednesday bingo night and renamed it in her honour.”
