It started, as many good conversations do, with a memory and a slice of cake.
On BBC Radio 2, a light-hearted chat about foods from childhood took an unexpectedly nostalgic turn when Tunis Cake was mentioned.
To the surprise of many listeners, this once-iconic treat was met with blank looks.
However, for those of a certain generation, Tunis Cake wasn’t baking—it was Christmas.
This left a question on the lips of the team at The Kitchen in Croxley: What is life without a McVitie’s Tunis Cake on the table?
For those not familiar with the dessert, it is a fruit cake topped with a thick layer of marzipan and chocolate, often decorated with festive icing or almonds.
Determined to revive the magic, the team at The Kitchen took up an invitation from Radio 2’s Scott Mills to recreate the legendary cake for his team to taste.
The result was a resounding success. Not only did Scott and his colleagues declare it delicious, but the seal of approval came from Dame Shirley Ballas.
Scott went one step further, collecting the cakes in person and spending time chatting with those hard at work behind the scenes.
His curiosity and warmth left a lasting impression, as did his good-natured posing for photos, including one with a Harry Styles lookalike and a contribution to a growing mural.
Beyond the cake and celebrity moments, the experience sparked a deeper reflection on connection for owner of The Kitchen Linda.
Linda said: “People are tired of scrolling — dopamine hits maybe, but also social envy, perhaps even boredom. What we need is interaction, communication and relationships. I’m happiest when friends reply; words of encouragement, appreciation and support mean the world. I read that Instagram may be dying (and I can see why if it’s all about paying an AI bot to turn your Tunis Cake into a brand).”
However, this was a moment about shared memories, human warmth, and the simple joy of cake to bring people together.
For that, many are grateful — especially to Scott Mills and his Radio 2 colleagues for The Kitchen team helping revive a delicious slice of past treats.
