According to a new poll, Hemel Hempstead is the happiest place to live in the East of England – and the seventh happiest place in Great Britain.

In the 2023 Happy at Home study by lettings business Rightmove, the Hertfordshire new town ranked in the top 10 out of 218 locations.

The poll was completed by 26,000 people across the country, with Hemel also coming top of the table out of all East of England areas.

St Albans also did well in the rankings, coming in at 19th nationally and fifth regionally, whilst Watford came 15th regionally, but came 131st nationally.

Elsewhere, the London boroughs of Harrow and Hillingdon fared far less well, with Harrow coming 170th nationally and 24th out of London’s 33 boroughs. Hillingdon, however, came at the bottom of the pack both regionally and nationally, making it the unofficial unhappiest place to live in Great Britain.

At the top of the table nationally was Richmond-upon-Thames in London, followed by Winchester in second place and Monmouth, Wales, in third place.

A spokesperson for Rightmove said: “The results of this year’s study showed that the most important contributors to happiness were feeling a sense of pride, belonging and community.

“Access to green space and nature is also important to residents, with those living in a rural area near a national park, or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, more likely to feel happy where they live.”
