Residents of Garston Drive congregated on Saturday, October 1, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the road they call home.
As well as food, refreshments and conversation, residents were able to enjoy perusing the original deeds in the development of Garston Drive.
A Garston Ideal Homes document dated October 1922 showed the first advertisement of the houses.
It read: “Large plots of Freehold Land and House complete from £765. It [Garston] is one of the healthiest and most picturesque rural districts of Herts.
“Buyers of land at Garston today will doubtless see the value of their property rapidly rising.”
This proved to be an accurate statement. Resident Ron Drew purchased his house some 52 years ago at the price of £5,250. Now, his house has an estimated worth of north of £600,000.
Ron was recently offered the chance to move to new developments on St Albans Road but refused point blank, having no intention of leaving his home which is an enduring tribute to roaring twenties architecture.
