Happy 102nd birthday Alm

Published on: 23rd September 2013   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category:

As local resident, Alma Attwood celebrates her 102nd birthday; she shares a smile with her friends and family as they throw a party in honour of their much loved centenarian. Alma believes the key to a long life is pink wafers, positivity and a pinch of luck. With lots of party food, several songs and many friends joining her at Margaret House residential home in Abbots Langley, Alma reaches this grand age bright-eyed and full of life. Alma said: “That’s the secret to a long life; pink wafers and chocolate. I consider myself very lucky too. I’m very happy here [at Margaret House], and am very well looked after.” Her son Ron and his wife Brenda frequently visit Alma, bringing along a dog called Bruce who Alma adores, even if he does try to eat her biscuits. Alma also has a love of knitting, having made several jumpers, socks and outfits throughout her years. Nowadays, she enjoys a good game of Bingo, and always shares her winnings with the residents. Alma was born a twin in London on August 7, 1911, and has lived in Watford since she was married in the 1930s. A popular face for a number of years on Watford market greengrocers, she has spent her long life as a social character known to many. Her sister passed away at the short-lived age of 48, meaning Alma has seen more than double the years of her twin. Alma didn’t retire from her work until the grand old age of 80, and didn’t move to Margaret House until she was well into her nineties. Allison Collins, who looks after Alma, said: “It’s people like Alma who make my job enjoyable. She’s such a lovely lady and always wakes up with a smile. She’s very sociable with the other residents too – a much loved character.”
