A singer-songwriter from Kings Langley has been recognised for her talent after winning the prestigious Rising Star BRIT award.

Griff, 20, born Sarah Griffiths, was nominated for the award which evolved from its original name of the BRITS Critics’ Choice award and has been won by a star-studded list of recipients including Adele, Sam Smith and Ellie Goulding.

After growing up in the village Griff went on to pursue a career in music and her success has been growing ever since as at the end of last year she was unveiled as the voice behind Disney’s first ever Christmas Campaign.

On winning the Rising Star award, Griff said she was blown away with the win and proud to have broken into the industry during the challenges of the pandemic.

She said: “In my head I’m still screaming from the phone call when I found out. It’s honestly such a miracle: how on earth did we manage to win a BRIT and break through during a pandemic?”

Previously, on being nominated for the award Griff said it was overwhelming to be recognised amongst the legends that had won previously.

She said: “It’s kinda terrifying how many legends have been nominated for this award. I never ever ever expected making beats in my music room after school could eventually lead to a BRIT nomination.”

Griff added that she grew up watching the awards on TV and aspired to one day be like the singers on the stage.

She said: “Super lame but I remember after school, catching up on the BRITs and crying watching Stormzy perform.

“And I don’t think I really knew what that emotion was at the time but I think it was just an overwhelming sense of aspiration.”

On Twitter after announcing the win, Griff revealed plans to release a mixtape titled One Foot in Front of the Other which will be released on June 11.

The BRIT Awards will take place on May 11.
