GOLDEN OLDIES: Daughter continues dad’s legacy by improving Bushey residents’ fitness

Published on: 16th March 2024   |   By: Annabel Stock   |   Category: Uncategorized

A woman who took over her father’s Bushey-based exercise class after 20 years at the helm, is continuing his mission to help people stay active in later life.

Mandy Engelsman’s father Ivor launched an exercise class for those aged 70-plus back in 1999. When Mandy took over in 2021, Ivor started attending the classes himself, and continued to do so until his health began to decline in November of last year. Ivor sadly passed away in January, aged 90.

Mandy said: “Dad was always into weight training. He worked as a physical trainer in the RAF and his hero was Arnold Schwarzenegger.”

After running an interior design business for 30 years, Mandy was looking for a change of career. Having completed a physical training qualification with a module equipping her to work with older adults, she began working in exercise full time.

Mandy’s Golden Oldies class, which is aimed at those aged 70 to 90, runs every Tuesday from 10am to 11am at St Peter’s Church Hall. A class for those aged 50-plus takes place at the same venue every Thursday from 10am to 11am.
